Home Sauna Cost: Indoor, Outdoor, Traditional and Infrared (2026)

“A home sauna installation costs $3,000 to $10,000 on average,” says HomeGuide (page dated September 2023), with a national average of $6,000 for a two- to four-person sauna. Fixr (updated January 2025) gives $3,000 to $6,000, with a national average of $4,500, a low end of about $2,000 and a high end of $10,000. What moves the price: HomeGuide says the cost “depends on the size, type, material, and construction labor,” and Fixr calls the heating source “one of the key deciding factors.” Electrical work, a base for an outdoor unit and running costs come on top or inside those totals depending on the guide, so each is shown separately below.
Home sauna cost at a glance
| HomeGuide (2023) | Fixr (2025) | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical range, installed | $3,000–$10,000 | $3,000–$6,000 |
| National average | $6,000 | $4,500 |
| Low / high | $1,300 / $24,500 | $2,000 / $10,000 |
| What the average describes | a two- to four-person sauna, installed (114 member-reported projects) | “a four-person steam sauna with a wood bench, door with a window, additional ventilation, and LED lighting” |
Indoor vs outdoor sauna cost
| HomeGuide (2023) | Fixr (2025) | |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor | $2,300–$11,500 installed (prefab room $2,300–$10,500; pre-cut kit $4,300–$11,500) | $3,000–$9,000 |
| Outdoor | Prefab $5,500–$14,500 installed; custom-built $12,000–$34,000 | $3,000–$6,000 |
The guides disagree on which costs more. Fixr says indoor installation “may be more expensive as you have to modify surrounding areas to protect from moisture and heat,” but that “You save on the slab as you already have a concrete foundation.” HomeGuide’s outdoor numbers start higher and note that “An outdoor sauna requires a solid, level foundation”; it prices leveling a yard at $300 to $1,000. If you pour a pad, This Old House puts concrete slabs at $4 to $8 per square foot. Line-by-line outdoor numbers are on outdoor sauna cost.
HomeGuide also warns: “Do not install an infrared sauna outside unless the model is designed for outdoor use.”
Traditional vs infrared price difference
Fixr prices types for two- to four-person saunas, installation included; HomeGuide gives one installed range for infrared.
| Type | Fixr (2025), installed | HomeGuide (2023), installed |
|---|---|---|
| Infrared | $2,000–$12,000 | $2,300–$8,500 |
| Electric (heater and stones) | $3,000–$5,000 | — |
| Wood-burning | $3,000–$4,000 | — |
The heater alone, without the room:
| Heater | Fixr (2025) | HomeGuide (2023) |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | $600–$2,640 | $700–$3,800 |
| Wood-burning | $260–$2,100 | $800–$3,000 |
| Infrared | $450–$600 | $200–$600 |
The wiring differs too. HomeGuide says traditional saunas typically need “a dedicated 220V circuit,” while “Most infrared saunas use a standard 110V outlet but should also be on a dedicated circuit to prevent overloads.” How the two heat, and what that means day to day, is on infrared vs traditional sauna. Installation and electrical costs
| Item | HomeGuide (2023) | Fixr (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Labor to assemble a prefab kit | $300–$1,500 | — |
| Professional assembly of a pre-cut kit | $1,500–$2,500 (elsewhere on the same page: $300–$2,500) | — |
| New circuit | $250–$900 (“a dedicated 220V circuit”) | $500–$800 (a 220-volt circuit in the existing panel plus a 220-volt receptacle near the sauna) |
| Electrician’s hourly rate | $50–$130 | $40–$100 |
| Custom-built four-person sauna, 8 x 5 feet | — | about $7,140 on average, professionally installed |
HomeGuide says installation takes 1 to 3 days, and that home saunas “typically do not require a drain.” The North American Sauna Society advises having an electrician check that your breaker panel has enough capacity as part of planning. Either way, a licensed electrician confirms the circuit and pulls the permit; see sauna electrical requirements.
Monthly running costs
| Heat type | Fixr (2025), per month | HomeGuide (2023), per 20-minute session |
|---|---|---|
| Infrared | $15–$20 | — |
| Electric | $25–$30 | $0.25–$0.50 (indoor sauna) |
| Wood | $20–$40 | $4–$8 (store-bought wood) |
HomeGuide’s formula for your own bill: heater kW × hours used per month × your rate per kWh. At the U.S. residential average of 18.16 cents per kWh (EIA, August 2026, preliminary), a 6 kW heater running flat out for an hour costs about $1.09 (our arithmetic). Treat that as a ceiling: UL 875, the UL safety standard for electric dry-bath (sauna) heaters, calls for an automatic temperature-regulating control, so, in our reading, the heater doesn’t have to run at full power the whole time. The sauna calculator does this math for your room and schedule.
Hidden costs to budget for
Things the headline price may not cover, with each guide’s figure:
| Item | HomeGuide (2023) | Fixr (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Control panel | $250–$800 | $290–$600 |
| Sauna rocks | $40–$90 | $40–$50 for about 40 lbs |
| Water bucket and ladle | $65–$125 | $40–$150 |
| Door | $700–$1,200 | glass $500–$2,000; wood $700–$900 (installed) |
| Exhaust ventilation fan | — | $100–$350 |
| Staining | $100–$300 | a gallon of stain averages $29 (Fixr: an outdoor sauna needs staining every few years) |
| Repair | $150–$600 | — |
| Removal of a 5’ x 7’ freestanding sauna | $250–$400 | — |
For outdoor barrels, makers sell weather add-ons separately: on Almost Heaven’s site (checked November 1, 2026), its barrel sauna rain jacket lists from $337. Almost Heaven’s barrel manual also suggests a UV-inhibiting exterior stain if you want to keep the wood’s original color. Before you buy, ask whether the heater, controls and stones are in the quoted price; if you’re weighing building it yourself, see DIY sauna vs kit.

Safety and permits
A sauna heater needs its own circuit sized to the maker's manual — have a licensed electrician wire it and pull the permit. Wood-burning stoves need the clearances and chimney in the stove's manual and local code approval. Before digging for a foundation, call 811. This site doesn't give medical advice: if you're pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor before using a sauna.
