Outdoor Barrel Sauna Buying Guide: Size, Wood, Heater, Base and Upkeep

We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page; it doesn't change what we list or how we describe it. How this works

Before you buy an outdoor barrel sauna, settle five things: how many people it must seat, whether the barrel is big enough inside for the heater you want, whether you can get a dedicated 240-volt circuit to the spot (or the barrel is large enough for a wood stove), what it will sit on, and who will assemble it and keep the bands tight. One 4-person barrel, Almost Heaven’s Pinnacle, is listed at $7,575 ($6,060 on sale when we checked, Nov 1, 2026) with a 6 kW heater that needs “240V, 30-amp.” The maker’s manual plans for 1,000+ lbs of sauna and users on the base.

What to decide before you buy

  1. Seats. Compare inside measurements, not the “person” number in the model name.
  2. Heater and power. Both makers below list electric heaters for every barrel. A wood stove goes only in barrels the maker approves for one.
  3. Base. A barrel can sit on concrete, pavers, a deck, or firm ground with pavers under the cradles, but it has to be level.
  4. Roof or cover. Rain can seep between the staves. It doesn’t hurt the sauna, but plan for it.
  5. Total price. Kit + delivery + base + electrician + assembly. The sauna calculator adds the kit, a concrete pad and a new circuit.

Sizes and how many people fit

Almost Heaven Pinnacle475¼″ W × 63¼″ D × 69¼″ H16″ W × 63¼″ L6 kW
LeisureCraft Harmony483″ W × 71″ D × 79″ H; 222 ft³20″ wide6 kW
LeisureCraft Tranquility683″ W × 94.75″ D × 79″ H; 297 ft³20″ wide7.5 kW

LeisureCraft’s table gives the 5-person Serenity the same inside size as the 4-person Harmony, so confirm sizes with a dealer. At Almost Heaven, the depth (the barrel’s length between the end walls) is what grows with the seat count. Fixr’s rule of thumb for any sauna is “two feet for each person to sit comfortably or six feet if you want to recline.” By that rule, the Salem’s 39¼-inch benches fit one person each, so two people use both sides (our reading).

Wood species and stave thickness

Check three things on the spec sheet:

Heater choice and 240V power

Almost Heaven lists the same heater for its 2- and 4-person barrels: “6kW, 240V, 30-amp requirement, hardwire connect,” plus a 15-amp plug-in connection for the light (the Pinnacle listing says 120V, the Salem listing 110V). LeisureCraft recommends 6 kW for its 4-person barrel and 7.5 kW for its 5- and 6-person barrels. These are the makers’ figures. A licensed electrician confirms the circuit and pulls the permit; Almost Heaven’s manual says “ALL ELECTRICAL WORK NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BY A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN.” Fixr puts “a 220-volt circuit in the home’s existing electrical panel” with “a 220-volt receptacle” near the sauna at $500–$800. This heater is hard-wired, so treat that as a rough figure. Almost Heaven’s manual adds that electrician costs “can vary greatly depending on several factors, including your sauna’s distance from your electrical service box.” See sauna electrical requirements.

Want wood instead? Almost Heaven’s product-page FAQ says it allows wood heaters with “our cabins, cubes, and large diameter barrel saunas.” LeisureCraft marks a wood heater as available on all three of its CT barrels. Harvia’s M3 stove is rated for rooms of 212–459 cubic feet; compare that with the volumes LeisureCraft lists above. Almost Heaven doesn’t list a volume for the Salem or Pinnacle, and neither is offered with a wood stove. The trade-offs are in wood-burning vs electric.

Base, cradles and drainage

The barrel rests on wooden cradles. Almost Heaven’s manual asks for a surface that is “firm and level, and can support the weight of the sauna and its users (1,000+ lbs).” If the barrel sits on the ground, it says the cradles should rest “on paver stones or something similar to prevent the cradles from settling into the ground.” It also warns that “a more pronounced slope will require shimming,” and that an uneven base “can result in poor-fitting staves.” The bottom stave is a drain stave with holes bored into it, so leave the ground under it able to drain. LeisureCraft’s seasonal checklist includes: “Check the sauna base to make sure water drains away properly.”

If you pour concrete, This Old House’s $4–$8 per square foot is a range for slabs in general (its example is a 30-by-30-foot slab), and its average for a shed slab is $480, so a small pad can cost more per foot. At $4–$8, a slab the size of the Pinnacle’s 78 × 71-inch footprint would be about $150–$310 (our arithmetic). Before you dig, call 811 a few business days ahead; Call 811 says to contact it “a few business days before you begin any digging.” Base types are compared in sauna foundation options.

Assembly

Almost Heaven says its kits “are designed for ease of assembly by the customer.” Its manual lists a cordless drill, rubber mallet, hammer, framing square, screwdrivers, utility knife, level and wrench, and says to “use two or more people” when moving heavy pieces. The company also offers professional installation “starting at $1,400.” The Pinnacle “ships within 6-8 weeks of purchase.”

Staves, bands, cradles and porch: the parts that set how a barrel sauna holds up outside.

The manual’s order of work shows what you’re buying: cradles, the drain stave and the lower staves, the two end walls (one with the door), the side staves, filler staves to close the top, then the bands. The band count depends on length: “4’ and 5’ barrel saunas require two bands,” “6’ barrel saunas require three bands,” and “8’ saunas require four bands.”

Maintenance

Almost Heaven’s manual also warns: “Do not smoke, use alcohol, or exercise in the sauna,” and “Do not exceed 30 min. in the sauna at one time.”

Safety and permits

A sauna heater needs its own circuit sized to the maker's manual — have a licensed electrician wire it and pull the permit. Wood-burning stoves need the clearances and chimney in the stove's manual and local code approval. Before digging for a foundation, call 811. This site doesn't give medical advice: if you're pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor before using a sauna.
